Eros Palmettes Burnout Scarf

SKU: 80-022538
  • The decoration of a Greek vase typically consists of a figural subject and ornamental motifs, often derived from plant forms. This eye-catching scarf design features an adaptation of the large, dramatic palmettes on the sides of a Greek lebes gamikos—a terracotta jar that is associated with weddings—in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection (ca. 340–320 B.C.). The figures on this handsome vessel from Southern Italy shows elegant ladies served by youths and attendants as well as winged Eros figures carrying festive paraphernalia, all of which complement the nuptial associations of the jar’s shape.
