Florence at the Dawn of the Renaissance Decorative Candle

  • The design on this 12 oz. scented candle is adapted from a textile pattern on the garment worn by the Virgin Mary in a tempera and gilt panel from about 1335 by Bernardo Daddi in the Museum's Painting's collection.

From 1300 to 1350, Florence withnessed rapid civic and church growth and was home to the revolutionary painter Giotto di Bondone and the iconic literary figure Dante Alighieri. In this period, which laid the foundation for the Renaissance, accomplished and prolific Florentine panel painters and illuminators developed such genres as devotional art and narrative painting, disseminating new religious and humanist texts composed in the city at the time.
