Kangxi Dengtu Silk Scarf

  • The soft China silk used for this scarf captures the festive colors and opaque qualities of hand-painted panels of Chinese lantern patterns in the collection of the Getty Research Institute.

Little is known about this concertina-bound album containing twenty-two patterns and text that has inspired the design of this scarf. The panels may correspond to constellation layouts found in astrological texts of Taoist tradition or symbolize gods of Chinese folk religion. They may have been used during imperial birthday celebrations. The author of the album included a collection of poems that praise the Qing emperor and celebrate peace.
