Renoir had spent the previous summer painting outdoors with Claude Monet, who encouraged him to move toward a lighter, more luminous palette and to indulge his penchant for luscious, feathery brushwork. Here Renoir retained something of Gustave Courbet's green-and-brown palette while choosing his subject from the sensual, lighthearted garden jaunts of eighteenth-century painters such as Jean-Antoine Watteau and Jean-Honoré Fragonard, whose works he had studied in the Louvre. Unlike the images of seduction created by his predecessors, Renoir's is a fleeting moment caught by chance--middle-class Parisians immersed in nature, possibly a local park, not set before a studio backdrop. The dappled light filtering through the foliage would become a trademark of Renoir's finest Impressionist works of the 1870s and 1880s. They appear to be waiting, perhaps for an audition or its outcome. The two figures are a study in contrasts: The athletic dancer dressed in a dazzling costume reflects the glamour and artifice of the stage, while the shabbily dressed, bent figure represents the drabness of everyday life. Edgar Degas painted modern life; his subjects, including laundresses, milliners, nightclub singers, horse races, and the ballet, reflected contemporary Parisian occupations and diversions. From the 1860s onward, Degas frequented the Paris Opéra, where he made numerous studies of performances, rehearsals, and backstage scenes. Later, he would refine and combine these motifs in his studio, in exercises of daring technical skill and compelling psychological subtlety. Here he demonstrated his complete mastery of the pastel technique. Delicately blended strokes are combined with bold hatching and emphatic slashes; pink, blue, and creamy tones describe the dancer in contrast to the dark, severe form of the older woman.

- 11 x 14 Print
- Item#: PR94

Waiting
Edgar Germain Hilaire Degas, French
about 1882
Pastel on paper
19 x 24 in.
83.GG.219

Print of Monet's exploration of color and light depicting the Rouen Cathedral.

- 11 inches x 14 inches
- Item #: PR101

'Everything changes, even stone.' Claude Monet wrote these words in a letter and vividly demonstrated them in paint, conveying a wondrous combination of permanence and mutability as the sun daily transformed the facade of Rouen Cathedral. Extending the building's encrusted stone surface to the richly varied impasto surface of his painting, he portrayed the cathedral perpetually re-emerging in the suffused light of early morning. Monet created several groups of paintings exploring the color, light, and form of a single subject at various times of day, but his Rouen Cathedral series was his most intense effort on a single site. He painted there in late winter in both 1892 and 1893, then reworked his thirty canvases from memory in the studio through 1894. He began this example in 1893, working in an improvised studio in the front room of a dressmaker's shop across from the cathedral. After creating a coherent ensemble, Monet selected twenty paintings that he considered 'complete' and 'perfect,' including this one, for an exhibition at his Paris dealer's gallery in May 1895. Pissarro and Cézanne visited and praised the series, and patrons quickly purchased eight paintings from the group.

The Portal of Rouen Cathedral in Morning Light
Claude Monet (French, 1840 - 1926)
1894
Oil on canvas
100.3 × 65.1 cm (39 1/2 × 25 5/8 in.)
The J. She looks straight ahead, a picture of poise and detachment even as she seems fully aware of the viewer's admiring gaze. Representing aspiring Parisian actress Jeanne Demarsy as the embodiment of Spring, this portrait debuted at the last major public exhibition of Manet's life, the Paris Salon of 1882. For more than two decades, Manet's paintings were rejected by the Salon or met with controversy; Spring was the most unalloyed success of the artist's Salon career, a career that ended tragically a year later when Manet died of causes related to syphilis. Appealing to critics primarily on account of Jeanne's charm, Spring also showcased Manet's mastery of his medium. The painting exhibits a marvelous range of brushwork, from the thin, delicate floral touches on the dress to the smooth handling of Jeanne's face and the broad, sketch-like strokes of the backdrop. The painting's sensual handling and bright, vibrant palette evokes the pleasures of the season it celebrates. When composing Spring, Manet had in view both the latest fashion trends and old artistic traditions. An avid connoisseur of feminine couture, he pieced together Jeanne's ensemble himself by scouring dressmakers' and milliners' shops. Posing his model in the studio, however, he referred to portrait conventions of the early Italian Renaissance, presenting her half-length, in profile, and against a mass of greenery. More than just an ephemeral 'fashion-plate,' Manet's archetypal Spring was conceived as a picture for the ages, summarizing his modern epoch through the figure of a beautiful Parisienne.

Jeanne (Spring)
Édouard Manet (French, 1832 - 1883)
1881
Oil on canvas
74 × 51.5 cm (29 1/8 × 20 1/4 in.)
The J. With this small gesture, Khnopff captured the child's vulnerability and uncertainty in facing the outside world. To further evoke a child's perception of a world scaled for grown-ups, he framed Jeanne Kéfer's tiny body against the adult-sized door and tilted the floor ever so slightly. Jeanne is further isolated by the free, abstract brushwork in the reflective door window behind her. Typical for Khnopff, Jeanne is not warm and inviting but cut off in the shallow background, a fixed haunting gaze on her face. Khnopff became a popular society portrait painter in the 1880s, using elements that served him well as an avant-garde Symbolist painter: visual realism and a mood of silence, isolation, and reverie. He frequently posed his models leaning against a closed door, flattening the space and resulting in a meditative, hermetically sealed image.

Jeanne Kéfer
Fernand Khnopff (Belgian, 1858 - 1921)
1885
Oil on canvas
80 × 80 cm (31 1/2 × 31 1/2 in.)
The J. The most telling aspect may be the furrowed brow above squinting eyes and a scrunched nose. But natural cracks in the bust's alabaster surface seem to echo the topography of his skin, both softened by age yet hardened by the extreme expression. The man's receding hairline, wrinkles, and sagging jawline contrast with tensed cheek and neck muscles. Although the character seems to express irritation and annoyance, it is not certain whether Messerschmidt intended that interpretation, because he did not give the bust a title. This bust and the series it belongs to reflect the intellectual concerns of artists and scholars during the Enlightenment era, when a surge of interest in the sciences occurred. Studies in physiognomy were highly popular at the time. Perhaps as influential was Messerschmidt's undiagnosed mental condition, which could have been schizophrenia. The outer body was hammered from a single sheet of silver with repoussé and stamped details. The horns, mouth, garland, and the tear ducts of the eyes are gilt, while the remainder of the eyes was inlaid with glass paste. The garland tied around the neck and the gilding of the horns mark this bull as a sacrificial animal. In the Hellenistic period, the use of luxurious gold and silver tableware was a feature of aristocratic life. Opulent vessels combining silver and gold for the color contrast, such as this cup, were especially desirable. Although many vessels in the form of animal heads or with separable liners are known, this vessel, with its combination of these elements, is unique.

Cup in the Form of a Bull's Head, 100-1 BCE
East Greece
Silver with leaf gilding
9 x 12.1 x 10.7 cm (3 9/16 x 4 x 4 in.)
The J. A pair of robust thighs serves as an elegant base. From inside this form rises a taller and more slender lower torso. Finally, an almost full-length torso rests within the first two pieces. Because the work is made of extremely thin bronze, the viewer can actually peek inside these forms. Throughout his career, René Magritte often revisited and revised his own imagery. This sculpture's motif is taken from a painting of the same title he created in 1962. Best known as a painter, Magritte's decision to produce sculpture toward the end of his life grew out of a conversation with his dealer Alexandre Iolas. Iolas suggested that Magritte produce a suite of sculpture based on his vast catalogue of paintings. Magritte selected images from eight paintings to be recreated as three-dimensional objects. For each sculpture, Magritte made a series of careful sketches that became the basis for wax casts. Though he died before the sculptures were cast in bronze, Magritte made several significant adjustments to the wax models and signed them when he visited the foundry in Verona, Italy.

Source Object:
Title: La Folie Des Grandeurs (Delusion of Grandeur)
Artist/Maker: René Magritte (Belgian, 1898 - 1967)
Culture: Belgian
Date: 1967
Medium: Bronze
Object Number: 2005.112
Dimensions: 152.4 × 121.9 × 83.8 cm, 242.6744 kg (60 × 48 × 33 in., 535 lb.)
© C. On most cuirassed statues, the breastplate is very elaborate with symbolic and allegorical relief decoration, which emphasized the emperor’s power. This example is unusual because the breastplate is a basic rendition of the human musculature and is not decorated. This lack of ornament probably indicates that the statue did not represent the emperor or his family but a general. The pteryges, or tabs on the bottom of the breastplate, however, are decorated. They show a number of motifs, including palmettes, rosettes, gorgon heads, lion and lynx heads, ram heads, and most significantly, an eagle clutching the underbelly of a hare. The use of this hare motif, as well as the general pose and style of the carving of the statue, indicate that it dates to the Flavian dynasty, specifically in the early rule of the emperor Domitian.

- Material: Bonded Marble with faux finish
- Dimensions: 7 1/2 x 4 x 4 inches (L x W x H)
- Gift box included
- Item #: MRTORSO

Source Object:
Title: Torso of a Cuirassed Statue
Artist/Maker: Unknown
Culture: Roman
Place: Italy (Place Created)
Date: about CE 81-96
Medium: Marble
Object Number: 71.AA.436
Dimensions: 107.5 × 78.7 × 34.3 cm (42 5/16 × 31 × 13 1/2 inches)

The 2nd-century CE statue that inspired this reproduction portrays Venus enfolding herself in drapery that modestly covers yet also sensuously reveals her nudity. At her feet, a dolphin supports the figure and alludes to the goddess of love’s birth from the sea. This depiction of Venus ultimately derived from an extremely popular cult statue known as the Aphrodite of Knidos, which was created by the sculptor Praxiteles about 350 BCE. Indeed, Praxiteles’s innovative work was so renowned that, beginning around 100 BCE, many artists produced variations on his theme of the naked Venus.

The Getty’s sculpture is a Roman interpretation of one of those Hellenistic variants. It was discovered in Rome around 1510, where it contributed to the Renaissance revival of the Classical tradition. Scholars once believed that it was owned by Cardi-nal Mazarin, advisor to Louis XIV, king of France. Although that anecdote is unlikely, the statue is still known to many as the Mazarin Venus.

- Material: Bonded Marble
- Dimensions: H: 7 x W: 2 1/2 x D: 2 inches
- Gift box included
- Item #: MRVENUS

Source Object:
Title Statue of Venus (the Mazarin Venus)
Artist/Maker: Unknown
Culture: Roman
Place: Roman Empire
Date: 2nd century CE
Medium: Marble
Object Number: 54.AA.11
Dimensions: 184 cm (72 7/16 inches)

Sculpture reproduction of Aristide Maillol's L'Air.

- Material: Resin
- Dimensions: H: 5 x W: 8 3/8 x D: 2 3/8 inches
- Includes gift box
- Made in China
- Item#: SCLPTMAI

This monumental nude seems to float in space. [The] picture was not just about a crossroads, but about us driving around. I'd had three days of driving and being the passenger. The driver and the passenger see the road in different ways. When you drive you read all the road signs, but when you're the passenger, you don't, you can decide to look where you want. And the picture dealt with that: on the right-hand side of the road it's as if you're the driver, reading traffic signs to tell you what to do and so on, and on the left-hand side it's as if you're a passenger going along the road more slowly, looking all around. So the picture is about driving without the car being in it."

Thus David Hockney described the circumstances leading to the creation of this photocollage of the scenic Pearblossom Highway north of Los Angeles. His detailed collage reveals the more mundane observations of a road trip. The littered cans and bottles and the meandering line where the pavement ends and the sand begins point to the interruption of the desert landscape by the roads cutting through it and the imprint of careless travelers.

David Hockney (English, born 1937)
Pearblossom Hwy., 11-18th April 1986, #2
Photographic collage of chromogenic prints
198 x 282 cm (78 x 11in.)
J. Like her Greek counterpart Aphrodite, Venus was intimately associated with love and beauty, yet other elements were connected to the Roman goddess. Venus’s first temples were erected in Rome during the 200s BCE to solicit her assistance in battles, and individual leaders later allied themselves with the deity. Julius Caesar and his heir, Augustus, claimed descent through her son, the Trojan hero Aeneas. Depictions of Venus were plentiful in domestic settings, and many examples have been found in Pompeii. Many were displayed in gardens, appropriate to the goddess’s deep-rooted connections with vegetation and fertility, as well as her connotations of pleasure.

- Material: Resin
- Dimensions: 3.75 in H x 1.1 in W x 1.75 in L
- Includes gift box
- Care Instructions: Clean with damp cloth; no solvents
- Made in China
- Item #: ROM02

Source Object:
Title: Head of Venus
Artist/Maker: Unknown
Culture: Roman
Place: Roman Empire
Date: about A.D. 100
Medium: Bronze with gold and pearl
Object Number: 73.AB.24
Dimensions: 4.5 cm (1 3/4 in.)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0130/8502/files/ROM02_A_63515a74-fef7-4f2c-a98e-bff84dcbdc51.jpg?v=1733874877
