The Department of Photographs was founded in 1984 with the simultaneous acquisition of several major American and European collections. Today, it is one of the finest collections of photographs in the world, with about 40,000 individual prints, over 2,500 daguerreotypes and other cased objects, 30,000 stereographs and cartes-de-visite, and 475 albums containing almost 40,000 mounted prints. The Museum's collection spans the history of the medium, from some of the earliest experiments in England and France in the late 1830s, through in-depth holdings of 20th-century masters of creative and documentary traditions, to representative examples of technical and artistic innovations of the 21st century.
