The almost eight hundred photographs in this collage were created on-site in California’s Antelope Valley over eight days, and the resulting composition, which rivals the size of his paintings, encapsulates Hockney’s understanding of photography as “drawing with a camera.” By taking close-ups of individual objects in the desert landscape, he introduces multiple viewpoints that activate the scene and engage viewers, who similarly experience it over an extended period of time as their eyes take in each detail. This work was originally commissioned, but ultimately rejected, by Vanity Fair for a story about the monotony of the road as experienced by the characters in Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita.
