Two separate trams of three cars each, designed by Otis Transit Systems, Inc., are in operation at the Getty Center. Both of the automated trams are attached to a drive cable along an elevated single-lane guideway. Each cable is driven by a geared system similar to that of an elevator. As one tram travels uphill, the other travels downhill, bypassing the first at the wide center portion of the guideway. This quiet, pollution-free, electric shuttle system transports visitors and staff from the parking structure alongside the freeway to the arrival plaza at the top of the hill. The three-quarter-mile trip takes about four minutes. Each 29-foot-long tram car holds 14 seated and 17 standing passengers; each three-car tram is thus able to transport 93 people at a time.
