Audio CD - Caneletto: Music of His Time

SKU: NXC8177
  • Over fifteen hundred years ago, ancestors of the Venetians calculated that the only way to avoid marauding newcomers was to abandon the mainland and surround themselves with water. But that was a long time ago. With the discovery of sea routes around Africa, Venice had become irrelevant in trading terms. In the age of Bach and Handel, rather than supplying the rest of Europe with goods, her function was to entertain it. The city had become a lure for rich travelers wanting new and exotic experiences. This led to the establishment of educating young girls, cloistered in monastic fashion in the four Ospedali, to sing and play instruments to standards of excellance. Hired by these sanctuaries, Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741), Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) and other composers of the era became music masters to these girls who became quite famous, gradually taking on associations as Greek Muses, Roman Vestals and Christian Angels. In 1668, 'An Italian Voyage' by Richard Lassels was published, and the institution of the Grand Tour of Europe was born. This is the world in which Caneletto (1697-1768) painted the beauties of his native city, producing impressive mementos for those on the Grand Tour who could afford a painting as a remembrance of their visit to Venice. Here those images are set to music by the fine composers of his time.
