Beginning in the first century AD, portraits painted on wooden panels in a highly naturalistic Greek style were often placed over the face of Egyptian mummies. The mummy in the antiquities collection at the Getty Villa is of a young man identified as “Herakleides, son of Thermos” in the Greek inscription above the gilded toes. The linen wrappings are painted red (a color associated with life and regeneration in Egyptian religion) and decorated with images connected to funerary ritual – crowned falcons, an ibis wearing a sun disk, a winged female figure who may be the sky goddess Nut, and the underworld god Osiris.
