Gold Cowrie Shell Earrings

We have run out of stock for this item.
  • Gold-plated earrings inspired by a string of twelve gold cowrie shell beads that were likely part of a necklace. The original hollow beads were made from two joined pieces of sheet gold with the distinctive lips of the shell carved into the surface. Cowrie shells come from the Indian Ocean and would have been known in Hellenistic Egypt, where the necklace was made. The original piece is on view as part of the museum’s antiquities collection at the Getty Villa.
