It was long thought that this female head in Parian marble, upon which this reproduction is based, came from one of the pediments designed by Scopas for the temple of Athena Alea; as such, it was identified with Atalante and later Hygeia. In fact, the sober elegance of this peaceful yet melancholic face has little to do with the energy and passion of Scopas' figures, and the work is now thought to come from a talented follower of Praxiteles at the end of the 4th century B.C.
