Intaglios, or engraved gems, are hand-carved from hard stones and typically feature an inscription or image on one side. Prominent figures in antiquity had unique intaglios, frequently mounted in a ring, which when pressed in wax served as a seal to authenticate important letters and make forgeries difficult. Beautifully carved ancient gems can be found throughout the Getty Villa's Antiquities collection.
