This Roman fresco fragment depicts a naturalistically rendered peacock. Native to India, peacocks were imported into Rome where they were bred as sacred animals, exotic pets, and extravagant delicacies to serve at fashionable banquets. These extremely costly birds were also kept in gardens of the rich as an indication of wealth, and their inclusion in garden scenes painted on fresco walls added a sense of luxuriousness. It is in this context that the peacock depicted in this fresco probably appeared.
