Greek Vessel - Corinthian Pixis

Located at the base of the Acropolis in the Plaka, the oldest section of Athens, is a charming workshop and gallery where artisan Sofia Gkani creates intricately detailed replicas of classical Greek vessels. Beautifully hand-painted, Sofia meticulously reproduces Corinthian, Geometric, Red or Black Figure designs on each unique terracotta piece. Each vessel is signed and numbered by the artist.

The ancient Greeks used this vessel to store valuables such as jewelry and coins. The animal frieze decorations were the distinctive trait of the Corinthian artists. The lion, deer, and waterbirds were typical animal designs depicted on Corinthian pottery. The sphinx was introduced into Greek artwork through the Corinthians who were trading partners with the Egyptians and first saw the sphinx in Egypt. They gave it a female face and wings and introduced this mythical creature into their pottery designs.
