Discophorus Bust Sculpture

This torso of a discus thrower, crafted in a composite material including alabaster, reproduces a fragment of the original bronze statue, now lost. The original marble work was created by the Greek sculptor Naucydes at the beginning of the fourth century BCE,  adhering to the canon of ideal beauty proscribed by Polyclitus (fifth century BCE) for an athlete at rest. Here, however, action is imminent; the athlete is portrayed as he is about to throw the disc, the concentration in his face revealing tenseness. The original is on display in the galleries of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.
