Reproduction of a Greek coin originally struck by the Alexandria Mint, 311- 305 BCE
Ptolemy was a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great, who became ruler of Egypt from 323 to 285 BCE, and founder of the Ptolemaic dynasty that ruled Egypt for 300 years. The head of a deified Alexander with the horn of Ammon wearing an elephant scalp is a symbol of his conquest of India.
On the reverse is Athena brandishing a spear and holding a shield.
