The art of the poet-painter William Blake reflects his own very personal visions, which he insisted were "not a cloudy vapour or a nothing; they are organized and minutely articulated beyond all that the mortal and perishing nature can produce." His set of large, color-printed drawings, created between 1795 and 1805, includes this striking image of Satan hovering in malevolent glory over an Eve entwined by the serpent of the Garden of Eden.
