Getty Exhibition Banner - Manet and Modern Beauty

  • Beautifully designed banners first flew above the streets of Los Angeles in 1997 to herald the opening of the Getty Center. Since that time, they have promoted rotating exhibitions at both the Getty Center and Villa Museums. Because the vinyl fabric has been exposed to outdoor elements, slight inconsistencies are to be expected. Produced in Los Angeles exclusively for Getty. Quantities are limited.

The price of each banner is $50. The banners are being sold on a first come, first served basis, as the supply is very limited. Each banner has the image on one side and the text on the other. All banners incorporate mandated air vent cutouts.

    - Each banner measures 35" W x 96" H (approximately 3' W x 8' H)
    - The vinyl banners can be cleaned with a damp cloth
    - Item #: BNRMNSP

Depicting aspiring Parisian actress Jeanne Demarsy as the embodiment of Spring, this portrait debuted at the last major public exhibition of Manet's life, the Paris Salon of 1882. For more than two decades, Manet's paintings were rejected by the Salon or met with controversy, but Spring, exceptionally, was an unalloyed critical success.

Appealing to critics primarily on account of Jeanne's charm, Spring also showcased Manet's mastery of his medium. The painting exhibits a marvelous range of brushwork, from the thin, delicate floral touches on the dress to the smooth handling of Jeanne's face and the broad, sketch-like strokes of the backdrop. The painting's sensual handling and bright, vibrant palette evoke the pleasures of the season it celebrates.
