This volume presents the proceedings of an international symposium organized by the Getty Conservation Institute and the J. Paul Getty Museum. The first conference of its kind in twenty years, the symposium assembled an international group of conservators of painted panels and gave them the opportunity to discuss their philosophies and share their work methods.

Illustrated in color throughout, this volume present thirty-one papers grouped into four topic areas: Wood Science and Technology, History of Panel-Manufacturing Techniques, History of the Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings, and Current Approaches to the Structural Conservation of Panel Paintings.

Contributors to the volume include David Bomford, former acting director of the J. Paul Getty Museum and former senior restorer of paintings, The National Gallery, London; R. Bruce Hoadley, professor, Wood Science and Technology, University of Massachusetts at Amherst; Ian McClure, director, Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, United Kingdom; Jørgen Wadum, chief conservator, Mauritshuis, The Hague; and Ciro Castelli, restorer, Opficio delle Pietre Dure e Laboratori di Restauro, Florence, Italy.

Kathleen Dardes is senior program coordinator in the Training Program at the Getty Conservation Institute. Andrea Rothe is former conservator-in-charge of Paintings Conservation at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
