Just outside the blocks of French text and larger illustrations, the pages of this medieval book teem with curious characters, creatures, and tiny plants—collectively called “marginalia.” This page wonderfully illustrates these elements, including brightly-colored flowers and leaves, a delightful monkey feeding a cat, a fantastic hybrid human-animal hornblower with three dogs on a deer hunt, and the sweet songbird that inspired this enamel brooch.
