Reproduction of a coin with the portrait of Augustus on the front and the Sphinx on the reverse, struck between 27 and 26 B.C., the year that Octavian became Augustus. The Sphinx on the coin was derived from the imperial seal on his signet ring and was meant to show authority over Egypt after the defeat of Cleopatra by his army.
