European Drawings 4: Catalogue of the Collections

  • Nicholas Turner

The Getty Museum's collection of drawings was begun in 1981 with the purchase of a Rembrandt nude; it has since become one of the world's most important repositories of European works from the fifteenth through the nineteenth century.

This fourth volume of the catalogue of the drawings collection reproduces and describes all the works acquired by the Getty Museum from 1995 to 1998, a time where particular emphasis was placed on strengthening the Museum's collection of French drawings.

Included in this volume are Édouard Manet's Bullfight (ca. 1864), a self-portrait by a young Edgar Degas, Nicolas Poussin's Path Leading into a Forest Clearing, and A Lady Walking in a Garden with a Child by her Side by Thomas Gainsborough. Also acquired during this period and catalogued here are a Degas sketchbook (ca. 1877), and a notebook (1812-14) by Theodore Gericault. The book is organized first by national school, then by artist, with individual works arranged chronologically; it includes drawings from every Western European school.

Nicholas Turner was curator of drawings at the Getty Museum from 1994 to 1998.
