Located at the base of the Acropolis in the Plaka, the oldest section of Athens, is a charming workshop and gallery where artisan Sofia Gkani creates intricately detailed replicas of classical Greek vessels. Beautifully hand-painted, Sofia meticulously reproduces Corinthian, Geometric, Red or Black Figure designs on each unique terracotta piece. Each vessel is signed and numbered by the artist.
This Greek vase is a reproduction of a lekythos which pictures the Battle of Troy in the geometric pattern. The lekythos was used for either cooking oil or scented oil. The narrow neck of the lekythos limited the flow of oil to drops or a thin stream, while the thick neck lip prevented waste.
