Pioneers of the first decades of photography are discussed in this collection of papers delivered at a symposium held at the J. Paul Getty Museum. This volume includes essays on early collectors of photographs as well as early patents. Also discussed are the connections between early photographs, the emergence of modernism, and the impact of techniques of photomechanical reproduction on modern perception.
