This sculpture illustrates the Greek myth of Pluto, god of the Underworld, in pursuit of his love Persephone (Proserpina), whom he abducted while she was gathering flowers on the plain of Enna in Sicily. The lifesize original, by Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), is a typical Baroque composition which emphasizes dynamism, depicting Pluto's pursuit in a spiraling flight of energy and struggle. The original sculpture can be found at the Galleria Borghese, Rome.
