This finely hand-painted amphora is a replica of a Panathenaic Amphora from the Getty collection.
Panathenaic amphorae were large ceramic vessels that contained olive oil from trees sacred to Athena, awarded as prizes to victors in athletic competitions.
Side A: Athena Promachos to the right, flanked by columns topped by statues (on the left, Athena with a naval flag pole; on the right, Zeus with a scepter and Nike). The goddess strides with her shield held out so that the interior is visible, and brandishes her spear. Inscription on A: "of the prizes at Athens" and "[during the] archonship of Theophrastos".
Side B: A driver and an apobates ride in a four-horse chariot moving to the left. The driver wears a long white cloak, which flutters behind him as the chariot team speeds along. The apobates is nude but for his helmet (white crest) and shield (white star blazon).
